A First Look at the Genesis G90 Luxury Flagship Sedan

Genesis G90 Luxury Flagship Sedan

The new Genesis line is becoming a reality with the introduction of the 2017 G90. The sedan was shown off to industry experts and car lovers alike at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January. With so much buzz around this new car, it's important to take a look at what has been announced, how it compares to the current Hyundai Genesis, and where the brand plans to go.

Current Hyundai Genesis

It's a good idea to look at the current Hyundai offerings, to get a good comparison between what they have now and what they will be offering with the G90. The 2016 Hyundai Genesis is the company's highest-end car at the moment, and was their first bat at a luxury vehicle. While the car has several benefits and features, it didn't call to the luxury car crowd like Hyundai was originally hoping.

It is expected that this car will move into the new Genesis lineup as the Genesis G80. The 2016 Genesis is available in two trim models – the 3.8 and 5.0 Ultimate. While there are a number of similarities between the two models, there are some significant differences, as well.

The Genesis 3.8 has a 3.8-liter V6 engine that offers 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with optional all-wheel drive, and the transmission is an eight-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC. The Genesis 5.0 Ultimate has a 5.0-liter V8 engine, offering 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard on this vehicle, as well, though the all-wheel drive option is not available. The 5.0 Ultimate also includes the eight-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC. Both trims of the Genesis have a wheel base of 118.5 inches, a length of 196.5 inches, a width of 74.4 inches, and a height of 58.3 inches.

Exterior Design and Styling

The sleek, beautiful exterior of the Genesis G90 is expected to blow the competition out of the water. The car was created by a new design team, and offers a luxurious styling that you simply won't see anywhere else. The profile is less soft than the 2016 Genesis, and offers a strong, bold styling.

The G90 is 204.9 inches long, giving it a longer profile than the current Genesis. The wheel base is 124.4 inches. Overall, the car is larger and more spacious than the previous options.

Power and Performance

The standard engine in the G90 is said to be a 3.3-liter twin turbo V6. This engine offers 365 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. There is also an optional 5.0-liter V8 GDI engine for the G90. With this engine, you'll get 420 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. It uses a rear-wheel drive train standard, but will have an available HTRAC all-wheel drive option. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC and paddle shifters. EPA-estimated fuel economy hasn't yet been released for the G90.

Interior Design

The interior design of the G90 is all about VIP comfort. Much time and effort has been put into ensuring the luxury sedan offers comfortable seating, amazing interior features, and beautiful style.

The seats in the car have 22-way adjustment for the driver and 16-way adjustment for the front passenger. There are also leg-cushion extenders for kicking back and relaxing. The front seats include memory control and heating. Even the back bench seats are heated, so no one is left to warm up slower than anyone else.

The new design will have layers of sound deadening materials to create a nearly silent drive. In addition, you'll get amazing acoustics on your music with the laminated glass and thick insulation.

Interior Technology

A number of features that will be available in this car have been released, but this is by no means an all-inclusive list. Since the car is not yet available, it is likely that other features will be added or released over the next several months.

Some of the best interior technology features for the G90 include:

  • Three-zone automatic temperature control with AQS and CO2 sensor
  • 12.3-inch HD navigation system with Driver Information System multimedia controller
  • LEXICON 17-speaker 7.1 Discrete surround sound system
  • Quantum Logic Surround and Clari-Fi Music Restoration technology
  • Wireless device charging area in the front
  • USB ports with front data and charging in both front and rear
  • Available rear seat entertainment system with dual 9.2-inch HD monitors
  • Hands-free power trunk lid
  • Bluetooth streaming and hands-free data-link

Safety Features and Technology

When you're driving a luxury car, you need to make sure that there are as many safety features as possible, and that they are top of the line. Because of this, there are a number of active and passive safety features available on the new G90. Some of these features include:

  • Intelligent Drive Mode with SmartShift
  • Genesis Adaptive Control Suspension with electronic dampening control
  • Tire pressure monitoring system with individual tire pressure indicators
  • Lake keep assist
  • Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Smart blind spot detection
  • Driver attention alert
  • Multi-view 360-degree camera
  • High beam assist
  • LED daytime running lights
  • LED auto-leveling headlights with Dynamic Bending Light

At this point, the 2017 G90 has not yet been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS. However, Hyundai has received amazing safety ratings and crash-test scores on the 2016 Genesis, so it is likely that the performance of the G90 will be just as good, if not better.

Release Information

Currently, there is no official release date for the Genesis G90. It is expected to be released sometime in 2016. At that point, there will be more information on features, specs, and trim models. In addition, the company has not yet released the starting price for the sedan.

However, while we don't yet know when the Genesis G90 will be available on the American market, we do know that Hyundai is working toward expanding the Genesis line. They said at the North American International Auto Show on January, 11th that they plan to roll out five other brand new, high-end models over the next five years. This will give the line a total of six vehicles. Many expect that this line will include a sports car, a smaller sedan, a small crossover, and an SUV.

In the News

It's probably not surprising that Hyundai and their release of this new line have been in the news for the last several months. Business Insider wrote a piece about the vehicle, stating that it is going to be a gamble for Hyundai. AutoBlog pointed out the differences between the G90 and the equivalent model in the Korean market – the EQ900. Even Auto News offered up some insight into the new vehicle and some of the designers behind it. Overall, this car has been making a buzz in the auto world.

If you're in the market for a new luxury sedan, you may want to cool your heels and wait until the second half of 2016. The Genesis G90 will likely be available soon after that, and you'll want to spend some serious time considering this car. With amazing features and beautiful styling, the G90 is set to take on its competitors in the luxury sedan field.
