If you’re driving through the snow this winter, getting stuck in it is a possibility. At Hyundai of Cookeville, we know how annoying it can be to get stuck in the cold and snow, but some preparation and tips from our Hyundai service experts can help. Here’s what you need to do this winter.

Prepare for the Snow

Preparing for the winter weather can make you less likely to get stuck and can make it easier to escape if you do get stuck in the snow. Obviously, a checkup at our service center before the winter weather really sets in is always a good idea.

You can have snow tires installed or make sure that your tires are in good shape, or you can have the all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive system in your Hyundai SUV inspected for issues.

You should also make sure that you have the proper supplies on hand in case you do get stuck in the snow. Tire chains, a shovel, traction boards, and bags of sand are all good supplies to have.

If You Do Get Stuck

First, don’t panic. Cars get stuck in snow all the time and can usually get out on their own with a little bit of patience and the right supplies. Remember to:

  • Engage the four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive system, if you have it
  • Use “Snow” mode if your car offers it
  • Don’t floor your car, just use a little bit of gas
  • Use a shovel to dig around your car if there’s too much snow

If you’re really stuck, you can place traction boards under the tires and hope that gives you enough traction to get moving. Sand can also help.

Some drivers go with kitty litter, but that can clump up and quickly become useless. Once you get free, make sure that you keep driving for a bit. If you lose momentum, you can get stuck again!
